Dulibadzimu Suburb in Beitbridge Grapples with Rising Brothels Amid Influx of Sex Workers

The Dulibadzimu high-density suburb in Beitbridge is facing a concerning trend as several houses are swiftly being transformed into brothels to accommodate the increasing number of commercial sex workers flocking to the area.

Mr. Lawrence Tshili, chairperson of the Beitbridge Residents' Association, voiced apprehension over this recent development, citing its adverse effects on the town's reputation. He emphasized that the conversion of residential properties into commercial establishments exacerbates the already acute housing shortage in Beitbridge.

Tshili highlighted the plight of genuine home seekers struggling to secure decent accommodation due to the rising demand from sex workers, who often outbid other tenants with their willingness to pay high daily rentals.

Local authorities have been alerted to this issue, but concerns persist among residents. Mrs. Lindani Ndou echoed Tshili's sentiments, underscoring the exorbitant rents paid by sex workers, some of whom travel from distant areas such as Zvishavane and Masvingo.

During a visit to the area, Mirror reporters witnessed young women parading semi-naked to attract potential clients, indicating the pervasive nature of the issue. Some sex workers admitted to renting these houses for extended periods, paying daily rates far above the standard monthly rents for the area.

In response to these reports, Chief Superintendent Chinengo has pledged to investigate and conduct raids on all properties suspected of facilitating commercial sex work.
